Despite being a critical part of all electronic systems, the pcb has probably been the most troublesome in terms of quality, cost , reliability and supply.
Unlike almost every other component the pcb is a custom manufactured part that can be produced by a limitless amount of suppliers. However, it is fair to say that there is no O.E.M. or C.E.M worldwide that has not suffered significantly from poorly produced or supplied products.
The causes of these perpetual pcb problems are very diverse and range from poor design for manufacture to poor choices of the right supplier for the right technology. Even if a pcb design is proven to be manufacturable, in depth value engineering to reduce the pcb cost is rarely undertaken early enough or comprehensively to be effective.
